Standard 3: Collaboration and Leadership
Leadership and establishing connections with educational partners and community will create a school library program that focuses on student learning and achievement. As part of this standard, efficient and effective
use of information and ideas is vital by encouraging personal and professional growth of teachers and staff. The following projects meet this standard by demonstrating ways to collaborate and improve teacher performance as well as provide ways for students to learn.
Collaborative Unit:
Collaboration Unit - Mythology
This collaboration unit was developed to demonstrate the collaboration of the librarian and high school english teacher. This unit was developed to provide a reliable teaching resource for the unit. Collaboration was used as a means to provide more media sources to find information on mythology and introduce research skills to engage students in the learning experience. A collaborative teaching environment allows both teacher/librarian to access student's skills and knowledge throughout assignments.
Improving Teacher/Librarian Collaboration:
Teacher/Librarian collaboration is often overlooked. I have created a Powepoint to be shown at the beginning of the school year to teachers within the building. The focus of this Powerpoint is the importance of collaboration and how the students benefit from the teachers and Librarian working together.
Inservice:
Inservice: How to use a Google Lit Trip.
To integrate technology and media, I developed a google lit trip presentation with hand outs, step-by-step instructional, rationale and powerpoint to share with the teachers. This presentation was constructed to make teachers aware of the fun, easy and engaging ways to teach students.
Google Lit Trip Presentation
The Google Lit trip was in powerpoint form allowing for a visual media presentation. The presentation focused on the background of a Google lit trip, ways and reasons to use it in the classroom and examples of Google lit trips. By showing the ease of use and the importance of use in the classroom, teachers will see the value of the media use.
Inservice Powerpoint Notes
Powerpoint notes were provided in paper form to all of the teachers that attended the inservice so that they could use them for reference for future media development.
Google Lit Trip Examples List
Age appropriate list of preconstructed Google Lit trips was also available for teacher's to use as a future reference.
Google Lit Trip Instructions
Teachers were also given step by step instructions on how to develop their own Google Lit Trip.
Collection Development:
High School Reference Collection:
As part of my reference services class, we were asked to develop a reference collection for a school library media center. The core collection I created was for a high school library. The collection included annotated bibliography for each resource, rationale for the collection and a flyer to introduce the collection. By completing this assignment, a greater understanding of curriculum alignment was developed as well as using evaluation of resources that are essential to the management of materials in a school library.
Flyer - Visual representation of the core collection that is eye catching and interesting to the learner.
Media Alignment:
With the increase in the need for use of technology in education, media plays a major role in providing students with a well-rounded education. I have included a media alignmenet that was developed for elementary students in one of my ITEC courses. The media alignment shows various types of media that met state standards. Examples are given of how to promote interest and engage students through the use of media in the classroom. Media alignment meets ALA standards by giving examples of how to align library media materials with classroom curriculum. By descriptive instructions and providing support of media materials, teachers will have the ability to easily use different typed of media in the classroom.
